Living your best life and performing to your potential requires more than just a set of concrete skills, you also need a resilient mindset.

Dr. Freedman created and founded Mind Body Advantage to help support individuals in strengthening their mind-body connection. Society places a huge emphasis on outcomes and focuses largely on the tasks necessary to achieve the end result. This hyperfocus on behavior leaves out the key component for success, the mind. Your mindset impacts your approach, the decisions you make, and your overall experience during a challenge. Importantly, while much of performance is mental, little time is spent on improving mental skills. It is my hope that through our work together, you will be able to better understand and reinforce your mind-body connection.

Services Offered

Sport and performance psychology

Sport and performance psychology services focus on learning to cope with stressors inherent in the performance world, strengthening the mind-body connection and reinforcing your mental skills.

When working with athletes, Dr. Freedman pulls from her personal experience of being a collegiate athlete and utilizes her extensive training to help athletes balance the various obstacles they encounter in sport. Dr. Freedman’s counseling training allows her to go beyond the specific sport issues and address the root problem which often is linked to a mental health concern. Dr. Freedman has conducted research and has substantial training working with athletes struggling with eating disorders. She has provided psychoeducational talks to trainers, coaches, and organizations along with working with athletes directly to manage their disorder through a HAES (Health at Every Size) informed team approach. She works with amateur, collegiate and elite athletes and performers.

DBT skills focus on the 4 modules from Marsha Linehan’s Manual: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation. Mindfulness skills are focused on building awareness and staying in the present moment. Distress tolerance skills are aimed at helping you get through crisis situations without making them worse. Interpersonal effectiveness skills are designed to help you evaluate relationships and increase communication skills. MBA is excited to share we will have a doctoral intern with us from May 2024 - April 2025!

Sophie Paolizzi

Sophie Paolizzi, M.A., is a fifth year Ph.D. candidate in UNC’s Clinical Psychology program preparing for her predoctoral internship. Her experiences as an athlete and in team leadership roles such as captain, coach, and team manager have taught her to see common problems individuals and teams have from multiple perspectives. Since 2020, she has  provided therapy to adolescents and adults using evidence-based therapy modalities, but prefers a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) informed approach. This aligns with her therapeutic style, which balances direct and constructive solutions with warmth, positive reinforcement, and humor.

FAQs

What can I expect in my first appointment?

The first appointment will be focused on getting to know you and your treatment goals. We will discuss a variety of different things including current symptoms and past struggles. We will also review clinic policies and go over any questions you may have. At the end of the intake, we will determine a treatment plan to address your goals and concerns, as well as discuss frequency of meetings.

If you want to learn more about services and make sure Mind Body Advantage is a good fit for your needs, you can contact us to set up a free 15 minute consult before you schedule an intake.

What are your fees for services?

Initial intake sessions (the first session) are $225. Follow up sessions for individual therapy, sport and performance work, and skills sessions are $185.

Do you take Insurance?

I do not take insurance and am out of network with all providers. I can offer you an invoice to submit to your insurance for out of network benefits. I strongly recommend you contact your insurance provider to determine what out-of-network coverage you have. You will want to ask about deductibles, coverage rates for each therapy code, and percentage of fees covered out-of network. Treatment procedure codes used often are 90791 (Intake, non-prescriber) and 90834 (Individual Therapy, 50 minutes).

Do you offer sliding scale rates?

I offer a limited number of sliding scale (reduced fee) spots. If you would like to discuss eligibility for sliding scale and current availability of a spot, feel free to reach out to info@mindbodyadv.com. Rates are agreed upon before the initial intake session and can be further discussed during the first session. Please make a note of your interest in sliding scale when setting up your appointment.
